This is a description of the standard levels of edit. The light edit is the simplest, and therefore the quickest and least expensive. Adding levels makes the process more time-consuming but produces the best result.
I have to preview the document in order to determine the appropriate level of editing. After I've reviewed it I will provide a cost estimate. If you approve the project, I won't go over the cost estimate by more than ten percent without your prior approval.
Light Edit. The document is checked for faulty spelling, grammar, and punctuation; incorrect word usage; correct cross-references; consistent spelling, hyphenation, numerals, fonts, and capitalization; and proper sequencing (such as alphabetical order) in lists and material.
Medium Edit. In addition to all light editing tasks, medium editing involves checking for incorrect or unclear terms or statements; making minor changes to sentences and paragraphs in order to achieve parallelism and change passive voice to active voice; and ensuring consistency in multi-author documents.
Heavy Edit. Heavy editing involves all tasks of light and medium editing. Additionally, heavy editing works to improve the overall flow of the document, including structure of sentences, paragraphs, and the document as a whole.
